There is not a clear definition on emotional intimacy, yet researchers agree that emotional intimacy involves a degree of disclosing private feelings and thoughts which fosters closeness, acceptance, trust, warmth, care with the expected reciprocation from the other partner. While there is a plethora of research on emotional intimacy, there is limited research on emotional intimacy that focuses on African American romantic relationships. When Black relationships are studied, they are often compared to White relationships which often neglect to consider the cultural and historical context of the Black experience in the United States. Thus, African American relationships are often viewed from a perspective of deficiency and negativity. This fails to highlight those couples that that are thriving by having a sense of “connectedness” which is a primary component of emotional intimacy. African American couples are willing and able to build intimacy, yet some helping professionals lack the skills to support this population. This presentation will use social learning theory, the social exchange framework, relationship scripts and media influences to help understand the unique dynamics with African American couples. Emotional intimacy will further be discussed in relation to attachment styles and fear of intimacy. African American men and women are seeking partnerships, yet they are failing at relating. Helping professionals can help bridge the gap by providing a safe place for African American couples learn healthy patterns of relating, identify sexual difficulties that drive emotional disconnect in relationships, improve communication skills and learn to touch without feeling. Clinicians will also learn evidenced based practices when working with African American couples.
